Question: Who would of been the most important person that has made discoveries about disease prevention?

  1. I think it is really hard to answer this one. There are so many great scientists, past and present who have contributed to our current ability to prevent disease, Louis Pasteur, Howard Florey, Ian Frazer, any of the scientists who created vaccines we use today.

Each of these people have provided invaluable insight into diseases and how they can be stopped, and in doing so have opened the door to learning even more about them.

  2. Its very hard to choose just one! To narrow it down I would have to pick a few Austrailan’s who have made some very significant discoveries who I admire and look up to. Howard Florey had a big role in making penicillin which had a huge impact on WWII, he saved a lot of lives. I also like Elizabeth Blackburn. She made discoveries about the enzyme telomerase which has a role with the ends of our DNA that we call telomeres. Her discovery was really important for cancer. Not so much for prevention but a really important discovery for our understanding of it!

  3. I would nominate Paul Ehrlich for conceptualizing the fabulous “magic bullet” idea in early 1900s. He suggested if a compound could be made that selectively targeted a disease-causing organism, then a toxin for that organism could be delivered along with the agent of selectivity. Hence, a “magic bullet” would be created that killed only the organism targeted. Magic bullet idea makes the core of many modern disease-treatment concepts that we use today and I’m amazed the Paul Ehrlich could think such an idea a century ago.
