Question: Why did you become a scientist?

Keywords:

  1. I didn’t really know the answer to this until about a year ago. I think it really came down to good teachers who made science fun and interesting and a desire to help people, but without being a doctor (I don’t really like blood much!) My year 12 chemistry teacher still let us play element bingo and grow salt crytal gardens, which really helped. Now I keep doing it because I am always trying new things, and getting to use new technology, and it is never boring

  2. I became a scientist because I’ve always been curious about how the world works. Science gives me the tools to answer any question I might have, either by experimenting myself or examining what other people have found. Even if you aren’t a research scientist, I think those are super important skills to have.

  3. It took me 7years after I finished school to work out I wanted to be a scientist. I was always really interested in disease, I wanted to understand all the nuts and bolts of what happens inside our cells when we get sick. I also love learning and problem solving and eventually combining all of these things led me to being a scientist. Now I love what I do and can’t image doing anything else! I have so much fun in the lab and get to do something different almost everyday. I love my work!

  4. Science is the only profession which can intellectually satisfy me throughout my life. It is a very dynamic profession, where learning never ends. Is it easy, of course not! You can’t just learn a couple of skills and expect them to keep you up for the rest of your career, you have to evolve, continuously update yourself about what is going on around you. You have to learn time management, multi-tasking, critical thinking, speed-reading and scientific writing and you can not stop learning. But when you achieve them all, it is that feeling which makes you feel very special, it is that feeling which makes you keep going and it is that feeling which gives you a real intellectual satisfaction in life. Plus you earn enough to pay your mortgage 😉
