Question: What did you want to do when you were a child?

Keywords: ,

  1. When i was in primary school all i wanted to do was swim in the Olympics, and my coaches were more than happy to support that dream. That was until they wanted me to train several hours every day and give up music and dance lessons. Then I wanted to be a marine biologist. I loved whales and dolphins, but that’s not really what a marine biologist does, which i learned in highschool. That and my cousin became one.

Then as my mother tells me, I decided i wanted to cure cancer or AIDS. and funnily enough, my first research area was cancer

  3. I wanted to be a florist when I was in primary school, but I’m actually allergic to flowers. Then I wanted to be a marine biologist because I lived by the ocean, but you still have to go in the ocean even when it’s cold and raining, which I don’t like. I’ve thought about lots of different careers too, medical doctor, teacher, science communicator. I settled on research because it is what I enjoy the most, of all the things I’ve tried so far.

I think the most important thing you can do when trying to decide what you want to be is to get some work experience in it! If you are in high school that is. I loved maths when I was at school, and I thought maybe I would like to be an accountant, or a physicist. But I spent a week with an accountant, and I found it really boring. I spent a week down at a CSIRO radio telescope and it was interesting, but I wasn’t really passionate about it. I’m so glad I could figure that out while I was in school!
