Question: Is there a formula that is in every experiment?

  1. There is usually some maths involved in every experiment. sometimes it is really simple like knowing you have 1,000,000 cells in a mL of buffer and knowing you only want 10,000. sometimes it is far more complex than that.

a favourite of most life scientists is C1 x V1 = C2 x V2 which helps us work out the above eample of diluting cells for an experiment very easily

  2. In general biology, we don’t use formulas like in chemistry, physics or maths very much. There is less mathwork involved. Instead we have protocols for every experiment. In molecular biology protocols can be really detailed therefore high attention to details is very important. You can think protocols as recipes. If you want to be a world-class chef, you have to follow up your master’s recipes until you reach a stage where you feel really confident to make your own recipes. Does it make sense?

  3. I don’t have a formula that I need for every experiment but I do have to do some kind of math for all of them. Usually is working out a concentration. Sometimes its what concentration of a sample I need, sometimes its the concentration of a chemical I need to weigh, sometimes it about how many cells I have.

Most of my protocols have what I need to do written out in them so I don’t have to remember the math every time.

  1. I think that all experiments have something to do with math! (formula)

  3. Sorry guys i actually ment ingredient 🙂

    • I don’t have any ingredient that I use for all my experiements. I use a lot of the same chemicals for different experiments for different things, but nothing for every single experiment.
