Question: My previous teachers had a problem with his shoulder, it had turned to a goo (the bone) what causes this and is there anyway to prevent it?

  1. Depending on what you mean by ‘goo’ it could be a number of bone diseases. if it was going holey and getting weak, it could be osteoporosis or marble bone disease. It could be Paget’s disease too. But if the bone completely dissolved away, it would most likely be vanishing bone disease, but less than 200 people in the world have that. I think Katelin probably knows more about how to treat bone diseases than me though

  2. There are several treatments available to control bone formation. If he had osteoporosis, he could take bisphophonates, which slow down the degredation of bones. If he had marble bone disease, that can be cured only by a bone marrow transplant. Paget’s disease can also be treated by bisphosponantes. In any disease where bones become more fragile or break down, part of the treatment is always high calcium intakes, adequate Vitamin D and sun exposure. Along with weight-bearing exercise, these the key ingredients for creating stronger bones.

If you could be a little more specific about what happened to your teacher, then we can tell you more about it 🙂

  3. Do you mean your teacher’s bones kind of -how to say’ melted or became softer? It sounds like osteomalacia rather than osteoporosis but I can not really say. Why don’t you ask your teacher what it is called? I would like to know.

  2. Hi tonystark,

Thanks for getting back to us with the type of disease your teacher had! Osteoarthritis is more common in obese people, or anyone who puts a lot of load on their joints or does repetitive movements, for example professional sports people. There are a lot of pain relief medications available, but as far as prevention there are special exercises to increase the function of the affected joint and limit pain. Surgery is also an option.
