Question: why do clouds change colour when it rains

Keywords: , ,

  1. For this answer, i went to a website on weather and clouds for help, as whilst i’m interested in meteorology, i don’t know that much about it

Clouds are white because they reflect the light of the sun. Light is made up of colors of the rainbow and when you add them all together you get white. The sun appears a yellow color because it sends out more yellow light than any other color. Clouds reflect all the colors the exact same amount so they look white.

clouds look gray when they block sunlight. The thicker the cloud, the more light it blocks. It doesnt always mean they are going to rain . you might have noticed that. As the water particles begin to precipitate together the clouds get heavier and thicker and this is why just before it rains, the clouds look gray, and just before it buckets with heavy rain and hail they look almost black, as they are very full of water and ice and block all the sunlight from coming through

  2. When it is raining clouds, which are made of tiny water droplets and ice crystals, get thicker and thicker. As the density increases, it starts blocking the light coming through sun and you start seeing a very dark coloured clouds. You can do a quick experiment to understand how it works. Get a single sheet of A4 paper, directly look at a light bulb through a sheet of white A4 paper then take 2papers and look at the light bulb again, each time you add one more paper to your pile, A4 papers will start blocking the light coming from light bulb and you’ll notice the colour change in papers.
