Question: If lettuce is 95% water then why is it green?

Keywords: ,

  1. All organisms including lettuces are mostly made up of water as water is vital for life providing the right conditions for proteins to exist. Lettuces are green because they are the photosynthesizing leaves of the lettuce plant and therefore contain chlorophyll which uses light energy to produce food for the plant. Chlorophyll absorbs energy in the red and blue spectra of the suns light and reflects the green part, which is why we see them as green.

Lettuce leaves are also tightly folded in on themselves to create a food storage organ that some humans find tasty and other smaller humans are forced to eat by their parents.
