Question: Do you support the banning of animal testing facilities?

  1. As much as i don’t love that we use animals in medical research, I do realise that it is a necessary step in the process to new medicines.

When you want to test something on animals, you must apply for permission with an ethics committee. This committee made up of scientists AND non-scientists determine whether you have done everything you can without using animals, and whether the data you have already got suggests an animal study will be likely to result in something to benefit humans. They also make sure you follow guidelines about how the animals are kept, and that you must not let the animals live in pain.

These committees make sure that people can’t just go and test anything like on any animal they like.

I hope one day we may come up with a way to not need animals though, and I don’t personally enjoy working with the animal models

  2. No, I think animal testing is a very important part of medical (and other kinds) of research. As Miranda said, there are many restrictions of the types of research you can do, and you have to demonstrate why it is very important.

I guess the other alternative to animal research is performing research on people. Testing a new drug out initially on a person seems like a terrible idea to me though…
