  1. Ankylosing spondylitis, the disease I study, can be incredibly painful. It can be very hard for people to even get out of bed in the morning. It can severely impact a patient’s quality of life, because just moving around is difficult. They can be constantly in pain, and this can be from the age of around 25 until they are 70! It’s a pretty horrible disease.

  2. Cancer and allergies can effect some people quite a lot and others not so much. It depends on the allergy and the type of cancer. Even when you are only mildly effected by the disease it can still be uncomfortable so I hope to help as many of these people as I can!

  3. Although it is mainly a disease of the elderly, Multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer in the world. About 1200 patients are diagnosed with multiple myeloma each year in Australia. Approximately 20,000 new cases were diagnosed in the USA in 2012. It is a fatal disease, most patients survive for about 5yrs after their initial diagnosis. We are trying to increase this survival time by testing new drugs, but also study the cells themselves to find more effective ways of treating this terrible disease.

  4. Cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory diseases which I am primarily investigating are No.1 cause of death worldwide according World Health Organization’s data. Cancers altogether are more prevalent than cardiovascular diseases but they don’t take as many lives as cardiovascular diseases. For instance hypertensive heart diseases can cause increased blood pressure, fatigue or sudden deaths.
