Question: What is the most common disease?

Keywords: ,

  1. This depends on what country you live in. In western countries like Australia and America, cardiac disease and cancer top the list of diseases which kill people. In places like africa, infectious diseases such as cholera and AIDS have top spot.

But that is diseases which cause death. There are many other diseases which don’t. I would imagine things like acne, or allergies, or the common cold (usualy the corona or rhino virus) would rank very highly as the most common overall, but as we dont all go and get tested for what virus we have every time we get sick, these don’t get recorded anywhere, so it is hard to be sure which is the absolute most common disease

  2. Miranda has covered most of the common diseases. It’s hard to know which one will be at the very top of the list depending on the population looked at and how many cases are reported. For example we don’t go to the doctor every time we get a cold so its hard to know exactly how many people get it each year.

Another disease which is quite common is gum disease. Lots of people do not make it to the dentist as often as they should and most of the population will have gum disease at some point in their life. When your teeth get sensitive to hot or cold food, or you see blood when you brush or floss, these are signs of gum disease. So don’t forget to brush at least twice a day and remember to floss!

  3. I agree with Kate and Miranda but I also want to highlight another disorder which as common as cancer in developed countries: mental disorders! Especially in recent years an extra emphasis is given to mental disorders as they place a huge burden on public health system. Fortunately, unlike cancer or cardiovascular diseases, treatment of mental disorders are mostly available and relatively straightforward.
