I can tell you that it is estimated that up to 1 million species live in the ocean and that up to 3/4 of those are yet unknown. So there’s still plenty to discover in the years to come
I do know that each year we are losing many species but simultaneously discover ~20,000 new species. I don’t know what percentage of newly discovered species are organisms living in sea/oceans, though. A synthetic biologist named Craig Venter has initiated an ambitious Global Ocean Sampling Expedition project. The major goal of this project is to assess the genetic diversity in marine microbial communities but I’m pretty sure he has been discovering quite amazing organisms that live in oceans.
