yup. it happens all the time. The project i was originally hired to work on didnt get any more funding, so now i work on another project, and we aren’t likely to have the time or money to get new data to ask for money again on the old project. it’s sad really, but every lab has projects that never got anywhere because they didnt have the money for it. and you can’t ask for money for research unless you’ve basically done a third of it already.
It definitely does happen. Thankfully not to me yet. However, most of what I’m doing is covered by the university as part of my post graduate studies so I know I will definitely get to complete my project this year.
I never ran out of money but sometimes it happens to fellow scientists and I get very upset to see good people with good ideas are forced to drop their on-going research…
