Question: Sometimes I stand up and everything goes black for a bit and I feel dizzy.... What is it?

Keywords:

  1. That sounds a bit worrying. It is not uncommon to have the occasional dizzy spell when standing up, but you should not be having your entire vision go, or regularly getting dizzy. I suggest you get checked out by a doctor, as this is all to do with blood pressure, and better to be safe than sorry.

getting dizzy when you stand up is due to orthostatic hypotension, or postural hypotension. When a person stands up from sitting or lying down, the body must work to adjust to that change in position. It is especially important for the body to push blood upward and supply the brain with oxygen. If the body fails to do this adequately, blood pressure falls, and a person may feel lightheaded or even pass out if it is bad enough.
When the body moves to a standing position, pressure monitors (baroreceptor cells) located in the carotid arteries (in the neck) and the aorta sense a subtle drop in blood pressure because of gravity, which causes blood to flow towards the legs.

  2. Postural hypotension, which Miranda describes can also come on from stress. Either way, if its happening frequently its probably best to get your doctor to check it out to be on the safe side.
