Question: How long can someone actually hold their breath without getting dizzy?

  1. This is a great question aeroknight. In my third year at uni we designed a prac to look into this. We hypothesised that people who were singers, or played an instrument that required blowing into it, or divers would be able to hold their breath longer than those who didn’t. We were right! you can train yourself to hold you breath longer and longer by practicing. you will get better results if you are disttracted by using that breath to sing/play an instrument or are looking at what is around you underwater.

You get dizzy because your body is starting to repond to the lack of oxygen in the blood being pumped around by the heart. now whilst i can’t say what is the longest time ever anyone has held their breath for without getting dizzy the longest time anyone has held their breath ever is 22 minutes! His name was Stig, he was from Denmark and he did it underwater.

I think my best during the experiment we did was about 3 minutes (i used to have singing lessons) and the girl who did free diving lasted for 4, so Stig sure has us beat!
