Insulin is a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy. Diabetes develops when the body doesn’t make enough insulin, cannot use insulin properly, or both, causing glucose to build up in the blood. In type 1 diabetes the beta cells of the pancreas no longer make insulin because the body’s immune system has attacked and destroyed them. they are usually destroyed by the time you are very young which is why it is often called juvenille diabetes.
I fully agree with Miranda. But what causes the body to start attacking its own cells this way is still unknown. There is some thought that a virus is involved but there may be genetic involvement as well. It is an area which definitely needs some more research!
The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. In most people with type 1 diabetes, the body’s own immune system — which normally fights harmful bacteria and viruses — mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone which lowers the amount of sugar in your bloodstream. In the absence of insulin (as your own immune system attacking insulin)the body burns its own fats as a substitute. Unless treated with daily injections of insulin, people with type 1 diabetes accumulate dangerous chemical substances in their blood from the burning of fat. If not treated this may pose a life threatening situation.
Hope that helps….
