Question: What are the highest and lowest known pulses (heart rate) recorded?

Keywords: , , ,

  1. a healthy person who is not an elite athlete will hve a reasting heart rate of about 50-70 beats per minute. You theoretical healthy maximum is 220 subtract your age.

The lowest recorded in a healthy adult as far as i know was Miguel Indurain, a cyclist and five time Tour de France winner, who had a resting heart rate of 28 beats per minute (guiness book of records says 27, but i dont know if he was healthy or not). That means he was just sitting there and his heart rate was that low and he was fine. I imagine there have been unhealthy people who have had it lower when they are unconscious or suffering from brachycardia (slow heart beat) this is because the heart beat is controlled by several different muscles which have a maximum heart rate they can produce. If the faster muscle stops working, you can end up with a very low heart beat, and it probably means you will need a pacemaker.

I’m not sure what the highest ever is, but people have reported heart rates in the very low 300’s, but this would be considered pretty dangerous by doctors.
