I’m primarily working on cardiovascular diseases which account for ~20million deaths worldwide annually therefore are No. 1 cause of death. It is very hard to say such and such disease are likely to be my greatest enemy because most of the nastiest diseases today are multifactorial which means that you can’t relate them to single factor. On the other hand there are really nasty neurologoical disorders which make you really suffer. I lost my grandparents because of Alzheimer’s disease. It was so painful for me to see them sometimes forgetting who I am and it was much more painful for them to realize they were forgetting everything sacred to them, all their memories and they weren’t able to do stop it. They wished to die when they were conscious. They both passed away. But this made me realize how awful a disease can be for humans as we are proud of prolonging our lives by taking the risk of suffering from really nasty diseases.
Finally I would like to comment on few modern diseases which I think would be a great problem for future generations. One of them is caused by hospital bacteria – thanks to so-called highly educated doctors mistakes of over-prescription and poor patient compliance with antibiotic therapy – which became a very strong bacteria strain, multiresistant against many antibiotics. Hospital acquired infections take ~100,000 lives in US only. It is a real tragic to see this picture because when scientists are trying to find cures for many serious diseases, a simple irresponsibility can create a problem like this – a bacteria strain which loves hospitals where people go to seek treatment and sometimes cannot come out alive…
The second one is not a disease but rather a medical condition which increases the risk of many diseases: Obesity… Obesity was extremely rare before 20th century. It is one of the heaviest burden which is caused by so-called modern life. Obesity brings such a heavy burden to economy and medicare system, I fear it would be the greatest enemy of humankind in the near future.
I work with superbugs, the greatest enermy would be a strain of bacteria which can’t be killed by any antibiotic drugs, not even the really expensive ones. That would be horrifying, which is why we work so hard to find new drugs the bacteria have never seen before.
I think it would be any cancer which progresses really quickly. It would make it much harder to treat or do anything about before its to late. I really hope for those cancers we are able to develop good diagnostic tests to detect it early and help those people.
