Some of the symptoms of multiple myeloma are:
– bone pain
– bleeding problems
– kidney problems
– infections
To diagnose multiple myeloma, doctors will perform blood and urine tests to measure the levels of certain proteins. Doctors will also perform cell counts (to calculate the number of certain types of immune cells to measure the health of the patient’s immune system). In severe cases, patients can get fractures in their bones or holes in their bones. If you’ve ever seen an x-ray, you’ll know that bones appear white on the black x-ray film. If a patient has holes in their bones from myeloma, dark spots can be seen in the white parts of the x-ray. If a blood cancer is suspected, doctors will also take a sample of the patient’s bone marrow to perform tests and also to look at under the microscope. Myeloma cells look quite distinct and can often be seen when a sample is placed on a microscope slide.
