Question: My blood groop is o- and my brother is o +so do I have a good blood grouping because my mum needed a injection when my brother was born I have the same blood type as my mum.

  1. you have the best blood type… for everyone else lol. you are what we call a universal donor as you don’t have the A or B antigens on the surface of your blood cells or the rhesus protein. But you can only get blood from someone else who is O negative.

  2. Hi cupcakesrachel. Just to add a little more on blood types. There are a lot of subgroups with the ABO and rhesus (+/-) system. Each of the subgroups is about different types of antigens expressed on the surface of your blood cells, one of the subgroups is called ‘Duffy antigens’ and is linked to malaria resistance.

    For people who need regular blood transfusions, they try and match up all the subgroups as closely as possible and they test the recipients blood every time just to make sure. Things can go very wrong if they give you a transfusion your not compatible with.
