I guess that depends on how you define “complete” My project from when i started in my job has now resulted in a paper, so the primary objective is complete, but by answering all those questions we first asked, now we have so many more, so my research continues. I think that happens in all research labs. Always more questions than you have time, money, or people to answer.
I often think about “completing” my PhD but never think about completing my research. Research is a continuous process where you keep shedding light on many unknowns and make new discoveries to do some contribution to our knowledge. Even if I narrow down my research to my PhD topic, it is never likely to end because I may answer one question but during the process of answering a single question you raise 100 more questions and it never stops. This is why I like research… It is not like 9am-5pm, start and finish sort of thing, it is a continuous process.
My current project will continue until November. That is when my honours thesis is due. But wherever I get up to with my research it will be continued on by another student so it does’t really end with me. Next year I’ll be looking to move to a different lab for my PhD and start a new project, but that will be related to other projects the lab has.
As Yagiz said there are always more questions in research.so I’m not sure it will ever be completed! Thats part of what makes science fun! Always looking forward at what new exciting things are coming next.
