HEAPS! i get to meet people when they come to visit labs here at the uni, i travel to conferences around australia (sometimes in adelaide itself) or overseas, and that could have as many as 1000 people at it. Now i didnt talk to all of them, but i certainly know a lot more people because of science.
I also interact with a couple of hundred scientists through twitter.
I met a lot of people through science. Scientist with good communication skills can easily attract attention of broad sections of public. From students to professors, high school teachers to businessmen… Above all I met my girlfriend in a science competition. We’ve been together for the last 6 years and she’s a scientist, too (sounds so geeky isn’t it:))
Lots and lots and lots! I’ve been lucky that even tho I’ve only just finished my bachelors degree I’ve already had work experience in 2 different institutes and in a research lab at my university. In all of those labs I’ve met lots of people who are all working on really different and interesting projects. I’ve also volunteered for other science programs and science events where I’ve met lots of people who aren’t working in science but have a general love of science and appreciate what research discovers.
Even tho we spend a lot of time working on our own projects in the lab or at a desk researching and reading, there is still a huge opportunity to meet people in science if you get involved with whats going on around you 🙂
