Definitely in a team. I’d be a bit lonely otherwise!

I would be lonely if i worked by myself. we have a lot of fun in our lab and are good friends. Always prefer a team. You get more done in a team too!

In the labs how many people are actually working on the same thing as you?

In my lab there is only me working on my project. but everyone in my team has projects which are very closely related so we can help each other too.

ally11 this is exactly a good reason why we work with those in our group, but we also go to conferences and share our data and those who listen can share their ideas. sometimes you end up working on projects together from many different countries.

I’m with Miranda and Kate on this! I much prefer working in a team, otherwise I think it’d be pretty lonely. We can be pretty serious and work pretty hard, but once in a while, we like to have a laugh and muck around a little and not be so serious all the time. Also as ally11 mentioned, it’s a fantastic way to share ideas, and get help when you’re stuck. And like Miranda said, a lot of sharing is done at conferences as well, which is where we can meet other people from other labs who work in similar area and set up projects that you can all work on together (but seperately in different labs – the internet is great for sharing ideas/results/problems/anything you want 😉 )
@lulu – like Kate, I’m the only one in my lab working on my specific project, but everyone else works on similar things and we often help each other out a lot.
I work in a lab of 6. we are a small to medium sized lab. Whilst our lab works on superbugs in general, each of us works on specific ideas. I work on how proteins recognise metals. specifically one metal. Our new masters students is also working on my protein as well as the metal binding protein the other postdoc works on. One of the PhD students works on identifying for the first time, pumps in the bacteria which pump out antibiotics before they can kill it. The other PhD student works on another protein, and our boss spends a lot of timedoing administrative things to make sure we have enough money to pay the postdocs and for all the reagents. He also has meetings with collaborators who we can work together and share our expertise for maximum benefit! But he still loves to come into the lab and work on any or all of our projects, or start a new one!
So we have one theme of research in our lab but several projects which could be worked on by one or many people depending on how much work there is to do.

I work in a really huge lab, we employ nearly 40 people! But not all of us work on ankylosing spondylitis. I work in a smaller part of that lab, with my supervisor, another PhD student and an honours student. I like working in both a big team and a small team at the same time. It means I get to hear about all the interesting things other people in the lab are working on, as well as get help from the small team that I work with.

I work closes with my supervisor and there are 4 other students in my lab. We share the lab with three other groups so sometimes there can be quite a lot of people in there!

My lab group is made up of 6 people (7, including my supervisor, but he’s a doctor and spends most of his time in the clinic and doesn’t work in the lab, so he doesn’t really count). We all work on the same disease, but each of us have a different topic we are researching. The techniques (and experiments) we perform are sometimes similar, so we can help each other out when we run into problems, but most of the time we work on our own projects.
