I work mostly on streptococcus pneumonaie. Every year about 1 million people die from being infected from this bacteria. these are mostly children under 5 years old. That’s a lot of children who don’t get to grow up. Not only do we research how to treat strep which have become resistant to many antibiotics, but we are also looking to see whether there is something simple and cheap that can be added to the food these people eat to help them fight off the infection. We are looking to do some experiments with mice in our lab this year to test our latest theory, but what we are going to feed the mice is a secret shhhh!
So I think that;s the most important thing i do. trying to find ways to make sure kids get to grow up and go to school and live full lives
It is very tough question sfurnfell, choosing the most important part of my work. I’m trying to establish a method to hack the biology of cardiovascular diseases – but my method is not limited to cardivascular diseases. When I successfully develop my method, scientists would be able to study functional roles of any cell in any system which is a long sought after goal in medical research. Once we understand the functional roles of different cells, instead of trying to fix you after you develop disease, we can prevent the disease or (if not) we can directly cure your problem as we will know the underlying mechanism of the disease.
