Question: What is the most common insect to spread diseases?

Keywords: , ,

  1. Worldwide, the biggest insect vector is mosquitos. They can cause, malaria, dengue fever, west nile disease, and pogosta disease. Malaria alone kills one million people a year, mostly in third world countries. Like bacteria, the malaria parasties are developing resistance to almost every drug we have to use against them, and the resistance is spreading. There is some great work going on in this area, especially in Australia, looking for new drugs, and ways to target mosquitos so they can’t carry the malaria parasite anymore. Luckily, Malaria isn’t so common here in Australia, but there are cases, and also cases of Dengue fever etc.

In the western world, the most common insect vector is the tick. Its bite can lead to lymes disease, encephalitis, rickettsiosis, and many types of fevers.

  2. Mosquitos!! Those horrible itchy little bites can be much worse if the mosquito was carrying a disease! Thankfully its not too much of a problem here, but if you are bitten and start to feel ill go straight to your doctor for a check up.
