We each have one on our bench, because the tools we need to put bacteria onto plate need to be sterilised first, and as they are metal, can be done by heating them until they glow red hot in the blue flame, or dippling them in ethanol, and letting the ethanol burn off. you can also pass the opening of a bottle through the flame to sterilise it.
I sometimes do. Not very often. I don’t need them for heating, we use either a microwave, waterbath or heat block for that. I sometimes use them to sterilize the air around the flame. Then I can work with liquids I don’t want bacteria contaminating.
