Some scientists have a weird sense of humour. They sometimes give really weird names to their discoveries. For instance one of the most important part of brain responsible from breathing rhythm generation is named as Botzinger. I always thought it is the surname of the scientist who found it but it turned out to be the name of Red Wine that the scientist who made the discovery was drinking. In the case of mCherry, I’m not 100% sure but there are two possibilities. Either they called it mcherry because the fluorescent colour you get from the protein is slightly brighter tonne of red or the scientist who engineered mcherry really liked eating cherries 🙂
There is a another fluorescent protein called green fluorescent protein which is abbreviated as GFP. A scientist improved the protein and named it mGFP, when I dug out what m stands for I found out it meant “monster” GFP 🙂
