Question: why do we have allergies?

Keywords: ,

  1. We have allergies when the immune system doesn’t know how to turn itself off. Everyone has an immune response to allergens but most people can turn this off when its no longer needed.

One theory is the ‘hygiene hypothesis’ where some people believe we are too clean now and our immune systems go into overdrive with an allergen because they aren’t trained properly. There is also a much higher number of people in developed countries with allergies compared to non-developed countries. In non-developed countries there is a much higher number of people with parasites and its through that this may have a protective effect from allergy because its training the immune system.

We don’t really know for sure yet how much of this is theory. There is still a lot of research to be done.
