Question: Do you harm animals in your work?

Keywords: , ,

  1. Currently my project does not involve any mice. But should it continue to go well and we design a new drug, we would have to do animal studies to see if it worked in a complex system similar to the human body. This would mean infecting mice with the bacteria then giving them the drug to see if it made them better. Sometimes the treatment doesnt work, but at least you then know this and can go back to the drawing board.

  2. I have worked with mice before and thankfully I did not have to anything that was harmful to them, but I did have to give them injections which they didn’t like (bit who does!!!). What we were allowed to do was very tightly controlled by the ethics approval.

  3. We do work with mice, and unfortunately we do inject myeloma cells into them. But we have to get permission from the ethics committee on any experiments that we do and follow their strict guidelines. Their job is to make sure that our procedures meet their standards and that the mice don’t suffer.
