It does relate to your DNA. There are actually multiple genes related to eye colour. We generally classify our genes are dominant or recessive. Because we have two copies of all of our genes, if you are showing the dominant characteristic, your genes may either be 2x copies of the dominant gene OR 1x copy of the dominant and 1x copy of the recessive – in this case you ‘carry’ the recessive copy but there is nothing about how you look that shows it.
So if both of your parents are have 1x copy of the dominant and 1x copy of the recessive they will show the dominant characteristic, but because you inherit one copy of a gene from each parent you may have inherited their 1x recessive copy from each of your parents so you won’t show the same characteristic as them.
In genetics we refer the combination of genes as our ‘genotype’ and we refer to the physical characteristics as our ‘phenotype’.
