I haven’t read that book, would you mind explaining to me what changes the DNA in the book?
There are chemicals and other damaging agents that can change and mutate our DNA. For example UV light can cause up to 100,000 points of damage to DNA, per cell, per hour! That’s quite a lot! But our cells are really good at repairing damage that occurs to our DNA. Proteins come along and return the DNA to its original sequence. When our DNA damage repair fails, sometimes we are still ok and sometimes it can start a disease like cancer. It depends on where in our DNA the damage occurs.
