When I grow my cells in the lab, the actually cells don’t change size. I grow them until the have divided enough times that they cover the bottom of the plastic tray or dish I have them in – we call this confluent. Then I scrape them off, and use some for experiments and some I put in a new plastic tray to grow more.
Some times I do set up experiments to grow the cells for a certain time rather than until they are confluent. This allows me to track changes in the cells while they are growing.
