Question: How do medicines work to cure colds?

Keywords: , ,

  1. Sadly there is no cure for the common cold which is most often caused by the rhinovirus. The medicines you get from the pharmacist treat the symptoms of the cold to make it easier for you to go about your day until your body kills off the virus.

Some cough medicines help take the mucus off the back of your throat so you dont keep trying to cough it up.
Nasal sprays work by acting on receptors that are found in the walls of blood vessels in the linings of the nasal passages and sinuses. It causes these blood vessels to contract, thereby decreasing blood flow into the linings of the nose and sinuses. This reduces swelling and the feeling of congestion. It also reduces the production of mucus, helping to relieve a blocked nose.

taking vitamins can help make sure your body has all it needs to fight the virus, but if you eat a balanced diet, it should already have everything it needs to do its job.

  2. While there are many cold medicines and treatments that suppress cold symptoms, there is no FDA-approved drug that cures a cold. The medicines we use when we get cold are known as symptomatics which means they are directly attacking the symptoms of cold (for instance, they ease your pain, headache or fever). There is a promising drug named DRACO being developed in USA. If you wonder why couldn’t we come up with a proper drug that acts on cold – well the short answer is because it took us a while to realize suppressing the symptoms is not a permanent solution. So what do we need to do in order to cure a disease? Here let me direct you a nicely asked question by lokroxs2013 and jbhiss2000: https://disease13.imascientist.org.au/2013/03/17/where-do-you-start-when-it-comes-to-finding-a-cure-for-a-disease/
Click on the link above, I explain there why.

  3. While there isn’t an approved drug to cure the common cold, there is one for the flu! It’s called Tamiflu and it attacks the Influenza virus. However, it only reduces the length of your cold by about a day, it does need to be taken really early in the disease process to be effective and it doesn’t stop you passing on the flu to people around you. There is also some debate on the effectiveness and whether its actually worth taking.

Coming up with a cure for the common cold and the flu would definitely be beneficial to a lot of people! But for now the best treatment is rest, treat your symptoms when needed and eat a healthy balanced diet to give your body everything it needs so your immune system can effectively fight the virus.
