Question: If you want to become a biomedical scientist, what is the best university to attend? Did the path you took make it easier or harder for you to get where you are today? Why was it harder/easier? What subjects should you take up in VCE to make it easier for you?

  1. There are several great universities in Australia for biomedical research. I think the best universities are those with many research labs as this will give you access to people who do research and you are more likely to have the option to do hands on research projects. This is not to say that people who go to universities with not many research labs don’t go on to become great scientists or that those research labs don’t do awesome science because they can and do!

I think in year ten we were given a book on what degrees you could do and where, and what subjects you needed to do to get into the degree. Some maths is always handy as there are always calculations to be done in the lab, most fairly simple, but some is very difficult. I think doing either biology or chemistry is a good option too, but i think the important thing is to check what subjects the degrees you are interested in doing require.

  2. There are lots of great Universities in Australia for studying biomedicine. Many of them even have specfic degrees in the area, such as a Bachelor of Biomedical Science. Miranda made some great points about what to look for when choosing a university to attend. There will be specific subjects you are required to take to enter in to some courses. Make sure you know what your course requires when choosing your VCE subjects! I think maths is always a good idea, of course english, and then as much science as you like! I took english, two maths courses and three science courses in Year 11 and 12.

  3. Great answers from Miranda and Katelin. I also think that its helpful to look at ads for jobs that you think you would interested in and see what they require. Some jobs will specify a particular major or area they would prefer you have knowledge in. You can then match this up to the subjects offered in universities and see which one would give you the skills you need for the jobs. When I started my degree I signed up to email job alerts from seek so I could keep an eye on what jobs were available in particular areas. When I get to the end of my postgraduate studies in a few years I feel I already have a good idea of what jobs will be around.
