Question: Why did you change careers?

Keywords: ,

  1. Well, when I finished school I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I studied psychology because I found the brain interesting and wanted to help people. When I started working as much as I liked working with disadvantaged families, it was very emotional work and I found myself feeling really worn down and tired a lot of the time which started to affect other parts of my life. I really admire the people who do it because they give a lot of time and effort and unfortunately don’t get much recognition for it.

I always liked learning about DNA and had curiosity about disease so I decided I wanted to build that into a career. I’m still helping people now, just in a different way. We spend so much time at work that its really important to find something you love doing and are passionate about.

Its ok if you don’t know what you want to do out of high school. You can try different jobs and experiences to work out what it is you really love doing. It’s never to late to go back to university or TAFE and build the skills you need for the career you want. Its hard work but most definitely worth it!
