Question: have you ever got a burn from an experiment before??

  1. I have indeed, but not a heat burn. I have gotten a minor burn from handling boxes from the -80C freezer without the proper thick gloves, and I have also accidentally dropped a chemical on my arm which caused a chemical burn. Luckily we had the material safety data sheet close at hand and were able to treat it quickly. It was scary though as one of the first things it said was “may cause collapse and death” but further down it explained that this was only if you were exposed to large volumes of the chemical.

  2. Thanks for your question toni14.

Luckily I haven’t had any burns from the lab. As Miranda mentioned, burns can happen from both the heat and the cold in the lab, so we have to use proper protective gear when handling very hot or very cold things. Acids can also give you burns if you breathe in the fumes, that’s why when we work with dangerous chemicals like acid, we also use it in a special hood that has an extractor fan to get rid of the dangerous fumes.

  3. I’ve had a -80 freezer burn too! Got a little blister on my thumb from it. At first I didn’t realise it was from the freezer because I only spent 2sec in there grabbing out a box. But I wasn’t wearing safety gloves so it was definitely from that. It shows how important safety equipment is!

  4. I’ve experienced two far ends of burns in lab. Once I got a burn from hotplate while I was preparing a yummy food for my fruitflies. I also got burn from liquid nitrogen splash which is known as cryogenic burn or frostbite. Both experiences taught me a very good lesson about safety 😉
